"The Earth is One country and Mankind is its citizen"
Jordanian residents took part in 2009's Earth Hour by casting their votes and switching off their lights for one hour on Saturday March 28, 2009.
An estimated 50 to 100 million people around the world switched off their lights for Earth Hour in 2008, and global landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Rome’s Colosseum, the Coke billboard in Times Square, Jumeirah Hotel in Dubai, in addition to many residences in Jordan have darkened for the Earth Hour.
In 2009, Earth Hour aimed to reach 1 billion people around the world in more than 1000 cities involving business, government and the community in the world’s largest global action on climate change.
Jordan was planned tp turned off lights at all public buildings and many main roads on Saturday 28th of March, 2009 between 8:30-9:30pm for the occasion of the Earth Hour and Amman residents were requested to join the event by officials. However, the municipality decided to turn off only street lamps in a couple of Amman streets.
Though Earth Hour remains a new concept in Jordan, many families and private businesses hosted candle lit Earth Hour events at private residences, cafés and restaurants.
As members of the WWF we are proud to have introduced the Earth Hour phenomena to Jordan!
